Best Beginner Corals for a Reef Tank

The best first corals forgive the small swings every new reef goes through. They are happy under modest light, don't need perfect water, and show you quickly when something is wrong. These are the ones we recommend.

Before any coral: is the tank ready?

Stability matters more than hitting a perfect number. A tank that sits steadily at slightly "wrong" values does better than one being chased up and down.

Green Star Polyps

About the toughest coral there is. It forms a mat of bright green polyps that sway in the flow, and it grows fast. The catch: it will spread over any rock it touches, so give it a rock of its own, or an island with sand around it.

Zoanthids

Small button polyps in almost every colour, and the classic second coral. They like low to medium light and gentle to moderate flow, and they spread steadily across the rock. Handle them with gloves: some zoanthids carry palytoxin. Our Zoanthid care guide covers the safety side.

Mushroom corals

Leathery discs in bold colours and patterns. They are happiest in the lower, shadier parts of the tank with gentle flow, which makes them great for spots where fussier corals would struggle. If one detaches and moves, it didn't like where it was.

Duncan coral

The easiest LPS (large-polyp stony coral). Green-tipped heads on a branching skeleton that open wide, and it visibly grows faster when you feed it a little once a week. Peaceful, so it won't sting its neighbours.

Ready for something harder?

Once your tank has been stable for a few months, Montipora is a good first SPS, and Hammer and Torch corals are stunning centrepieces, as long as you give them space.
